Detroit Lions Fan Site - Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are wildly popular in Detroit and Lions fans cant wait to see their grid iron heroes hit the field.
Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril is still seeking a long-term deal, but seemingly lacks the leverage needed to make it happen this offseason. Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril is definitely a man of conviction.
It is hard not to admire him for having such a strong belief in himself. Avril believes he is one of the NFL's top defensive ends. As a result, he wants a long-term deal. The franchise tender in front of him (one-year deal worth $10.6 million) just will not do.
Avril has my utmost respect for his beliefs.
However, my respect does not give Avril any leverage in contract negotiations.
In order to obtain the long-term deal he desires this year, Avril needs some sort of leverage. Unfortunately, for Avril, he just does not have it right now. It does not mean he is a bad player, or undeserving of a lucrative deal. It just means the Lions have little incentive to meet his contract expectations.
It's just business.
Lions president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew believe they have already given Avril several significant offers. While the details of those offers are unknown, it obviously was significantly below Avril's expectations.
Avril's likelihood of acquiring the offer he wants decreased following this year's National football league Draft.
Teams looking for a defensive finish either signed one out of free agency or satisfied that require throughout last weeks' draft. The chances associated with a team suggesting an indication-and-trade deal now are very slim. Even when a team was interested, Detroit would need to take away the franchise tag, quit its to receive two first-round draft picks as a swap, sign Avril, then trade him away. The Lions aren't crazy enough to stop a 26-years old entering the best of his career simply because they are able to get it done.
That leaves Avril with couple of options at this time.
If Avril needs to sign the main one-year tender, he shouldn't feel defeated.
The Carolina Panthers franchised Julius All kinds of peppers in '09 and that he eventually signed a six-year deal worth $91.5 million ($42 million guaranteed) with Chicago this year. Vincent Jackson was franchised through the North Park Battery chargers this year. Peyton Manning is going to be around the Hall of Fame eventually, but Indiana labeled him this year. He later decided to a five-year deal worth $90 million to remain in Indiana, but was launched twelve months later.
Avril of the Detroit Lions NFL football team is within good company this season.
NFL football's Saints quarterback Drew Brees is really a Super Bowl MVP, but was hit using the tag too, Colonial receiver Wes Welker continues to be consistent for a long time, but was labeled. Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Grain was labeled. Might receiver Dwayne Bowe was labeled. Even Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte, that has transported his team's offense recently, was labeled.
Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson was labeled this offseson, but signed a five-year deal worth $51 million in mid March. Jackson, 25, was named towards the Professional Bowl following the 2009 and 2010 seasons, and is just one of five gamers in National football league history to record a minimum of 900 yards receiving in all of his four seasons.
Avril could still wait and hope Detroit meets his contract demands, but unless of course Lions backup copies Lawrence Jackson, Willie Youthful, Everette Brown and rookie linebacker/defensive finish Ronnell Lewis sustain significant injuries this offseason, he might not have that wish.
Avril is certainly a guy of conviction. and he wants the Detroit Lions to make it a huge payday, but the Detroit Lions have to be smart too.
